Dear Vice Chancellor:

Subject: Decline in the Sales of Beauty Soap.

As you requested on March 20, this report outlines the results of my investigation into the recent decline in the sales of beauty soaps in Peshawar region.

According to you instructions, I visited Peshawar region where I held in depth discussion with the regional sales manager. I also held informal talks with four sales reps, first as a group and then individual. Then I surveyed 90 selected grocery stores. In addition, I interviewed wholesalers, retailers, and customers. Virtually no one is satisfied with the situation. About 80 percent of the interviews told me that 60 percent of the sales have decreased for the last ten months.

My findings are given below:

• a.      The quality of the beauty soap is not in keeping with the needs of the customers. They prefer high quality soap with good perfume.
• b.      The size of beauty soap is somewhat smaller as compared to the other soaps. Its color, logo, and designs are not so attractive.
• c.       Somme smuggled soaps like pears, Dove, Zest, and imperial leather are available in the local Bara Market and Hayatabad. They are cheaper and better in quality than the beauty soap
• d.      The company’s sales reps are not highly motivated. Their salaries and commissions are not according to their capacity and experience. Some reps did not get any commission after more than three weeks of selling times.
• e.      The law and order situation in the North West Frontier province has deteriorated rapidly. This situation has adversely affected the business environment in the province.

In view of these findings, I recommend:

• a.      The quality of beauty soaps should be improved. For this purpose, its detergent should be changed. New brands of fragrant quality with attractive log must be developed.
• b.      Gift and prize schemes should be launched to motivate more and more customers.
• c.       A greater portion of the company’s advertising budget should be spend on television and radio programming with folk music orientation so as to reach more customers.
• d.      The new soap should be available in three different sizes: large, medium, and small. Furthermore, it should be in attractive color such as pink, green and white.
• e.      The company should devise effective training programs to enhance the capacity and efficiently of its sales force.
• f.        The company should raise the salaries and commissions of its sales reps in order to boost their morale.
• g.      On time free home delivery should be ensured.
